Week 5 is here and it’s the beginning of the bye weeks. You will be without the IDPs from Atlanta, Chicago, Green Bay, and Pittsburgh.

You can continue to find my green dot article and projections over at The IDP Show.

As always, my goal with this article is straightforward: give you the context, nuggets, and matchup trends you need to feel confident setting your lineups.

I’m not going too deep on cornerbacks here, but if you’re looking for matchup-level analysis, The Cornerback Corner has you covered.

Enough with the dissertation, let’s get into the Week 5 matchups.

San Francisco 49ers vs. Los Angeles Rams

  • Nick Bosa is out for the year. Bryce Huff saw most of the pass rush work, but was off on early and run downs. He’ll be a big play format play, as his tackle floor is lowered without that early down work. He should matchup on Alaric Jackson when he’s on for nickel packages. Jackson had a rough Week 4, allowing a sack and 4 total QBPs. Huff is a boom/bust big play specialist.

  • Sam Okuayinonu is seeing 63% of the snaps, but he’s not a good edge rusher. He’s got a 55.1 pass rush grade on the year and has just 5 QBPs in 64 pass-rush snaps.

  • After recording 6 pressures in Week 3, Mykel Williams had just one in Week 4. It might be the lack of Nick Bosa. He recorded a 51.5 pass rush grade.

  • The Rams are an average matchup, allowing 13 tackles/gm to the LB position. They’ve only allowed one LB to go over 8 tackles. Either way, with bye weeks and injuries, Fred Warner and Dee Winters are must-starts this week.

  • I like Marques Sigle’s matchup with the Rams and has DB3 potential. The Rams are allowing 14 tackles to the safety position. Sigle is playing 53% of his snaps in the box and is producing a 10.1% tackle rate.

  • Even though Jared Verse will see Trent Williams on most of his pass rush snaps, you can’t sit him. Williams has a 72.4 pass block grade. Even though he hasn’t given up a sack, Williams has allowed 2 QB hits and 12 total pressures. Verse is generating a 14% pressure rate and has sacks in consecutive games.

  • Byron Young’s matchup is just as difficult. It’s hard not to trust the talent with Young, however. Colton McKivitz has an 80.2 pass block grade and has allowed 6 total QBPs. Might have to tempter expectations with Young, and hope he can get some tackles, as he’s averaging 5.7 per game.

  • Braden Fiske has been a big disappointment through 4 games. After recording 8.5 sacks last season, he has yet to record one and has just 5 tackles. You can move on for a better option at IDL.

  • Nate Landman has been inconsistent, and since recording 10 tackles in Week 1, has 17 over the last 3. He has a 10.9% tackle rate, which is not great consider his volume. I’m giving him one last chance this week, as he has a good matchup with the 49ers, who are allowing 17 tackles/gm to the LB position.

  • Kamren Curl has been productive despite 42% of his snaps on the LOS. He has three games of 9+ tackles and has a 13.7% tackle rate. Safeties are averaging nearly 15 tackles/gm. He’s a DB1 this week.
